Part of my work in Gootte Studio, 2014/2015

What did I do?

While working at Gootte, I designed the user interface of the site, while working closely with their user experience professional to make their wireframes come to life.

What?

Henry Stewart Talks Ltd (HSTalks) is a leading provider of online, audio-visual lectures, seminar-style talks and case studies for medical schools, business schools universities and commercial enterprises in over 60 countries around the world.

Users

HSTalks users are students from all over the world. They age between 18 - 28 years old, and they speak a good level english.

It was very important for the team at hstalks to maximize the ability to extract information from the lecture. They identified a few features that would be very helpful in doing that. I was tasked with design the interface.

The Player

The most challenging feature to design was the player. It included so many features that aren't part of our usual player wireframe, such as the slide index, the topics covered, the transcripts and more. It was a real puzzle to figure out.  I started with looking for inspiration and I turned to youtube. We wanted the students to feel at home and have a sense of familiarity when they open a lecture. The challenge was to add on to that familiarity in a way that would be organic and not forced.

Lecture Player Page

We divided the many features into different section and created a mini player that would scroll down with the user so that they could explore the page without missing any second. The player could always be collapsed to the side and expanded again if need be.

HST_header1_ddn.jpg

The header, especially the right corner, represent the level of access users are given to the lectures. As this service can be given to students by universities, there needed to be an exact representation of that. The top header design is when users have no access, and then the level of access gradually increases until the last header.

Underneath are all the instances of the menu/form for the accessto the service. It was important to design all levels of access and make the distinction between them so that if users wanted to recommend this service to their institution (assuming hstalks lectures aren't provided) they could easily do so.

Embed this talk

Sometimes, the students themselves need the lecture or parts of it in their own lecture or presentation, so the team at hstalks wanted the option to embed the lecture (or part of it). I designed this pop up to give maximum control over the process and make it look easy.
